New EU food labelling laws came into force in January 2012.
It is now compulsary to label food to indicate if one of the following applies:
GLUTEN FREE (less than 20 parts per one million)
VERY LOW GLUTEN (traces of over 20 but under 100 per million)
NO GLUTEN CONTAINING INGREDIENTS (made in a gluten free environment with non gluten containing ingredients, but not tested.
This is fabulous news and should make shopping much easier!
This does not affect our supermarket campaign against the the unnecessary adding of gluten to packaged foods, meats
In 2010 Gluten Free bread sales amounted to 13.9 million pounds.
Gluten free food sales has increased by 89% in the last four years alone.
Its estimated that in addition to the one percent of the population who are celiacs, a further 11% are leading a wheat free diet by choice.
Free From sales soared to £238 million in the UK in 2011
An estimated £12 million people in the UK refrain from eating wheat either because of celiac disease, wheat intolerance or general well being.
Globally, the Free From industry is worth over £2 billion a year!
An increasing number of people who are sensitive or intolerant to xanthan gum is being reported according to celiac.com in the States. Wickapedia also mentions that an allergic reaction is possible and Food Standards recommend not to eat it if the source is unknown.
The 2012 Free From fair at Olympia this year was well attended and had 169 exihibitors as opposed 117 in 2011. The next fair is being held in October in Liverpool.
